What does discoloured nails feel like with bruised nail?

A small collection of blood beneath the nail can create a red, purple, brown, or nearly black area. The colour may spread or move forward as the nail grows. Pressure beneath the nail can make touch, gripping, walking, or wearing tight shoes uncomfortable. The nail may remain firm, or it may loosen after a stronger injury. The visible mark can last while the tender feeling settles.

Protect the finger or toe from further impact, keep it clean, and use a cool wrapped pack briefly during the early swelling period. Elevating the hand or foot may feel more comfortable. Do not pierce or drain the nail yourself, because this can injure the nail bed or introduce infection. A clinician can decide whether examination, imaging, or pressure relief is appropriate.

Seek prompt assessment when pain is severe or worsening, the injury was substantial, the nail is split or partly detached, or the finger or toe looks crooked or cannot move normally. Get advice if redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever develops. A dark mark without a clear injury, or one that does not grow out with the nail, also deserves review.
