The active ingredient determines what the shampoo can address.

A shampoo containing ketoconazole may reduce the overgrowth of a yeast associated with dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Other medicated formulas target scale, inflammation, or organisms with different ingredients. Scalp flaking can have several causes, so persistent symptoms should not be labelled as dandruff without an examination.

The product may reduce itchy scalp, oily scalp, redness, or visible flakes, but it may not cure every underlying cause. Hair products, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, infection, and other scalp conditions can look similar. Improvement may require repeated use according to the label or clinician’s instructions, followed by maintenance use when advised.
