What does lymphoedema therapy treat?

When lymph drainage is reduced, fluid can collect in tissues. This may cause heaviness, tight skin, aching or reduced movement in an arm or leg. Lymphoedema therapy aims to control these effects through skin care, exercises, compression and specialised massage such as manual lymphatic drainage. It manages the condition; it does not remove cancer or replace cancer treatment.

Swelling can follow surgery or radiotherapy, including treatment for breast cancer. A therapist will examine the affected area, ask how symptoms change during the day and check how you move. The plan is adjusted to your measurements, skin condition, daily activities and ability to use a compression garment.

Use compression only as directed and check the skin underneath it. Gentle movement, prescribed exercises and paced activity can help the lymphatic system move fluid. Moisturise intact skin, protect it from cuts and notice changes in fit, colour or temperature. Keep appointments so the therapist can review swelling and modify the plan.

Contact a clinician promptly if swelling becomes suddenly worse, the skin is hot or red, or you develop fever, increasing pain or a new rash. Seek urgent care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain or fainting. A new swollen limb should be assessed rather than assumed to be lymphoedema.
