What does loss of smell feel like with common cold?

Cold-related congestion can prevent odours from travelling to the receptors that detect them. Coffee, perfume, cooking, and smoke may be harder to notice, and meals can seem dull because flavour depends heavily on smell. Loss of Smell is a very common presentation of Common Cold. The timing is often linked to a stuffy or runny nose, but smell loss can have causes other than a cold.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose foods with a variety of textures and basic tastes if eating feels less appealing. Saline spray or rinsing can ease congestion when used according to the label and with clean water. Avoid smoking and strong chemical fumes, which can irritate nasal passages. Take care with food storage, and rely on smoke and gas alarms rather than your sense of smell.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are worsening, smell does not begin to return after the cold has settled, or the change is affecting nutrition or safety. Seek urgent help for shortness of breath, chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, severe dehydration, or a severe headache with neck stiffness.
