What Does Light Sensitivity Feel Like With Meningitis?

People may want a dark, quiet room, shield their eyes or keep them closed because light intensifies head pain or discomfort. Meningitis can also involve fever, a severe headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, unusual sleepiness, confusion or a rash. Symptoms can develop together or change over time, and not every person has every feature. Light sensitivity by itself has many possible explanations, including migraine and eye irritation. The concern is the combination with signs of serious infection or altered alertness, not the light sensitivity alone.

If meningitis is a possibility, do not wait for the symptoms to settle or try to manage the situation at home. Keep the person in a safe, quiet place, note when symptoms began and seek emergency medical assessment. Do not drive if there is confusion, weakness, severe pain or reduced alertness. Avoid close contact while awaiting advice if an infectious illness is suspected, and follow the emergency team’s instructions about medicines and fluids.

Call emergency services immediately for light sensitivity with a severe or rapidly worsening headache, fever, stiff neck, confusion, difficulty waking, seizure, repeated vomiting, breathing problems or a new rash that does not fade when pressed. Babies may instead be irritable, unusually sleepy, feed poorly or have a bulging soft spot. Do not wait for a rash or for all symptoms to appear. Rapid assessment matters because meningitis can worsen quickly.
