What does joint pain feel like with sickle cell disease?

Pain may build gradually or start suddenly, and it can affect the hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, or other joints. The area may feel tender, though the skin does not always look swollen. Movement can become difficult, and the pain may last longer than ordinary muscle soreness. A person may also feel unusually tired or unwell during an episode.

Sickle cell disease can reduce blood flow in small vessels, contributing to pain in bone and joint tissues. The sensation varies from one person to another. A familiar pain plan from your haematology team is more useful than trying to judge the cause from the feeling alone.

Follow your personal sickle cell pain plan, drink fluids if you can, and keep warm without overheating. Use prescribed medicines exactly as directed and record when the pain began, where it is, and whether it is changing. Do not delay contacting your care team if your usual plan is not controlling the episode.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or unusual pain, pain that is not settling with your prescribed plan, fever, chest pain, breathing difficulty, severe headache, weakness on one side, confusion, fainting, or marked dehydration. A painful swollen joint also needs prompt assessment because infection or another problem can occur alongside sickle cell disease.
