What does jaundice feel like with liver cancer?

Jaundice may first show in the whites of the eyes and can then affect the skin. It may not hurt by itself, but itching can become troublesome. Urine can turn dark and stools pale when bile flow or processing is affected. Other possible symptoms include ongoing tiredness, reduced appetite, nausea, unplanned weight loss, a feeling of fullness after small meals, or discomfort beneath the right ribs. Some people have no obvious symptoms early on.

These features are not specific to liver cancer. Jaundice can result from several liver, gallbladder, blood, or bile-duct conditions, so only an assessment can clarify the cause.

Arrange prompt medical review for new jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, or persistent itching. A clinician may examine your abdomen and request blood tests and imaging to assess the liver and bile ducts. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention any previous liver disease, viral hepatitis, or changes in appetite and weight. Avoid alcohol and do not stop prescribed treatment unless your care team tells you to.

Seek urgent care if yellowing comes with severe abdominal pain, fever or chills, repeated vomiting, confusion, severe sleepiness, fainting, unusual bleeding, or inability to drink. Rapid deterioration can signal bile-duct infection, blockage, or serious liver dysfunction. Emergency assessment is appropriate when these symptoms appear, regardless of the suspected cause.
