What does itching worse at night feel like with head lice?

The itch may be strongest behind the ears and near the nape of the neck, although the whole scalp can feel irritated. Some people feel movement, tingling, or a persistent tickle; others mainly notice sore, scratched areas. Look closely in bright light for live crawling lice or firmly attached eggs close to the hair roots. Loose flakes usually brush away more easily than eggs attached to individual hairs. Itching can continue after exposure because the scalp may remain irritated.

Use a fine-toothed detection comb on wet, conditioned hair, working methodically from the scalp outward and wiping the comb after each pass. If live lice are found, follow a pharmacist or clinician’s advice about an appropriate treatment and its repeat instructions. Check close household contacts and avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats, or pillows until the situation is addressed. Clean recently used hair tools and wash personal items that touch the head according to their care instructions.
