What does a tubal dye test treat?

During hysterosalpingography, contrast liquid is passed through the cervix while images are taken. The clinician can see the outline of the womb and whether the liquid travels through the fallopian tubes. A blocked tube may help explain difficulty conceiving, but the result does not identify every cause of female infertility.

The test itself does not remove a blockage or guarantee pregnancy. A related scan called HyCoSy can assess the tubes without the same type of X-ray imaging. Your clinician may discuss fertility treatment, including IUI, after considering both partners and the full assessment.

Tell the clinic if you could be pregnant, have an allergy to contrast material, or have symptoms of a pelvic infection. Follow instructions about timing, medicines and eating. Mild cramping or spotting can occur afterward; use the aftercare advice provided and ask when results will be reviewed.

Contact the clinic for fever, worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, unusual discharge or feeling unwell after the procedure. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, breathing difficulty or swelling that could signal a serious reaction.
