What Does Hydrotherapy Treat?

Short answer
Hydrotherapy treats movement-limiting pain and stiffness by using water support, warmth and guided exercise.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Less stiffness and easier movement
How hydrotherapy works
Water supports part of the body's weight, which can reduce loading on painful joints while you practise movement. Warm water may help muscles relax and make stretching more comfortable. Sessions can target Joint Pain, Joint Stiffness, balance, walking or shoulder movement. A therapist may use walking drills, gentle resistance and range-of-motion exercises in a Hydrotherapy Pool. Hydrotherapy can form part of care for Ankylosing Spondylitis, Fibromyalgia or Frozen Shoulder, but the programme should match your diagnosis, strength and mobility.
Preparing for a session
Tell the therapist about open wounds, skin problems, bladder or bowel control concerns, heart or breathing conditions, dizziness and fear of water. Wear suitable swim clothing and follow the pool's hygiene rules. Move slowly when entering and leaving because wet surfaces can be slippery. The therapist adjusts water depth, temperature, pace and resistance; a session should challenge movement without provoking a flare that lasts after you leave. Exercise Therapy on land may complement or replace pool work when appropriate.
When to seek care
Stop a session and tell the therapist about chest discomfort, unusual breathlessness, faintness, confusion, sudden weakness or severe pain. Seek medical advice for a new swollen, hot or red joint, fever, or symptoms after an injury. If pain or stiffness is worsening despite treatment, arrange reassessment rather than increasing exercise alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether hydrotherapy is suitable with your diagnosis, what goals will be measured, and which movements to practise between sessions. Ask about pool access, supervision and alternatives if water exercise is not suitable.

Questions people ask
Is hydrotherapy the same as swimming?
No. Hydrotherapy is a planned therapeutic programme led or prescribed by a trained professional; swimming is general exercise.
Can hydrotherapy worsen pain?
A temporary effort sensation can occur, but severe or persistent worsening should be reported so the programme can be adjusted.
