What does hip pain feel like with hip fracture?

Hip Pain is a common presentation of Hip Fracture. The pain may be deep in the groin, at the front or side of the hip, or along the upper thigh. Moving the leg, trying to stand, or putting weight through it can make the pain much worse. The leg may look shorter or turn outward, but these visible changes are not present in every fracture. Some small or impacted fractures cause milder pain and may still allow limited walking, so being able to move does not rule one out.

Pain after a fall can also come from bruising, a muscle injury, or another joint problem. Only an in-person assessment and appropriate imaging can determine whether the bone is fractured.

If a fracture is possible, stop walking on the injured leg and keep the hip as still and supported as you can. Do not try to straighten, rotate, or force the leg into position. Ask someone to call emergency services or arrange urgent transport; do not drive yourself. Tell the care team about the fall or impact, the exact pain location, and whether you take medicines that affect bleeding.

Get emergency help immediately after a fall or impact if hip pain is severe, you cannot stand or bear weight, the leg appears shortened or turned outward, or movement causes marked pain. Urgent help is also needed with a cold or pale foot, new numbness or weakness, heavy bleeding, fainting, or confusion. Do not wait for symptoms to settle, because protecting the injured limb and arranging timely assessment matters.
