Short answer

Hip pain with gluteal tendinopathy is commonly felt over the outer side of the hip, with aching or burning that can worsen when lying on that side, walking uphill, or climbing stairs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How this pain may feel

Hip Pain is a common presentation of Gluteal Tendinopathy. The discomfort is usually near the bony point on the outside of the hip and may spread a short distance down the outer thigh. It can feel sore when pressed, tight after sitting, or sharp during a sideways step. Turning in bed, crossing the legs, standing on one leg, or repeated running may load the irritated tendon and bring on symptoms. Pain can settle when the load is reduced, although it may return with the same activity.

This pattern can overlap with other causes of hip or lower-back pain, so the sensation alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may check hip movement, strength, walking, and the positions that reproduce your symptoms.

What you can do

Temporarily reduce activities that clearly provoke the outer-hip pain, while keeping gentle movement within a comfortable range. Avoid lying directly on the painful side; a pillow between the knees may reduce pressure when side-lying on the other side. Gradual strengthening of the hip and buttock muscles is often part of physiotherapy, with the load increased according to your response. Arrange an assessment if pain keeps returning, affects sleep, or limits walking and everyday tasks.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or rapidly worsening pain, inability to bear weight, a hot or swollen joint, fever, new numbness or weakness, or pain after a significant fall or impact. These features can point to a problem needing more urgent assessment than tendon overload. For persistent outer-hip pain without these warning signs, book a routine evaluation with a qualified clinician or physiotherapist.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which movement or examination finding supports gluteal tendinopathy? What activity should I modify for now? Which strengthening exercises fit my current pain level? How will we track progress, and what other causes should be considered if the pattern changes?

Questions people ask

Can gluteal tendinopathy cause pain at night?

Yes. Pressure from lying on the painful side or turning in bed can aggravate outer-hip pain.

Does outer-hip pain confirm gluteal tendinopathy?

No. Several hip and back problems can feel similar, so an examination helps distinguish them.
