What does hip pain feel like with avascular necrosis?

Hip Pain is a common presentation of Avascular Necrosis of the Hip. It may begin as a deep ache in the groin, buttock, or outer hip and become more noticeable with standing, walking, or other weight-bearing activity.

Early discomfort may come and go after activity. As the hip becomes more irritated, pain can last longer, appear at rest, or disturb sleep. Stiffness may make it harder to rotate the leg, put on shoes, or get in and out of a car. Pain can also be felt in the thigh or knee. These features overlap with many hip conditions, so they do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.

Arrange a medical assessment for persistent or progressive deep hip pain, particularly if walking is becoming harder. Until then, choose lower-impact activity, use support if needed, and avoid pushing through a sharp increase in symptoms. Tell the clinician about previous hip injury, steroid treatment, alcohol use, and other health conditions because this context may guide the evaluation.

Seek prompt care if pain suddenly becomes severe, you cannot bear weight, the hip is hot and swollen, or fever accompanies the pain. Emergency assessment is appropriate after a fall with inability to stand or move the leg normally.
