What does a hearing test treat?

Testing can show how softly you hear different pitches and whether sound is reaching the inner ear normally. Depending on the assessment, it may also help distinguish a problem in the ear canal or middle ear from a problem involving the inner ear or hearing nerve. Results can guide treatment, monitoring, hearing devices, communication support, or referral. The test does not remove earwax, cure infection, or stop Meniere's Disease. Those conditions need their own assessment and management.

Tell the clinician when the hearing change began, whether it affects one or both ears, and whether you have ringing, dizziness, pain, discharge, or noise exposure. Mention medicines and previous ear problems. The clinician may look in the ear before testing; earwax or fluid can affect the result. Bring any older hearing results so changes can be compared over time.

Seek urgent medical advice for sudden hearing loss, new facial weakness, severe dizziness, trouble speaking, or hearing loss after a head injury. Arrange a routine assessment for gradual difficulty following conversation, persistent ringing, repeated ear blockage, or hearing that affects work, school, or safety.
