Unlike some forms of hair loss, scalp ringworm often causes noticeable skin symptoms. You may feel itch, soreness, burning, or tenderness and see redness, scaling, crusting, or small bumps. Hairs can break close to the scalp, leaving uneven stubble or areas that look moth-eaten. Some people develop a soft, swollen, painful area with drainage. The condition is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair, so the skin findings and pattern of broken hairs are useful clues.

Hair loss by itself has many possible causes and does not identify an infection. Because scalp ringworm can spread through shared combs, hats, brushes, or close contact, an examination is especially useful when scaling and patchy loss occur together.
