What does groin pain feel like with groin strain?

Short answer
Groin Pain is a very common presentation of Groin Strain, often felt as inner-thigh soreness or a sharper pull during movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common location
- Inner thigh or where it meets the pelvis
- Typical triggers
- Sprinting, kicking, cutting, or squeezing the legs together
How it may feel
Most people with Groin Strain notice groin pain. It may begin suddenly during sprinting, changing direction, kicking, or stretching, or develop gradually after repeated activity. The sensation can be tender, aching, tight, or sharp. It may be easier to locate where the inner thigh meets the pelvis, and squeezing the knees together or lifting the leg can reproduce it. Bruising, swelling, reduced strength, or pain with walking can occur with a more significant injury.
These features describe a pattern rather than prove its cause. Groin pain can also come from the hip, abdomen, or other tissues, so an examination matters when symptoms persist or limit activity.
What you can do
Pause sprinting, kicking, cutting movements, and any stretch that sharply increases pain. In the early period, comfortable walking and gentle movement are usually preferable to forcing the area. Use cold wrapped in a cloth for short periods if it helps, and follow advice about pain relief. Once daily movement is easier, a physiotherapist can guide progressive adductor and hip strengthening before a return to sport.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if you cannot walk normally, felt a pop, have notable bruising or swelling, or symptoms are not improving with activity modification. Seek urgent help for severe pain after trauma, a visibly deformed area, numbness, or sudden testicular pain or swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which muscle or tendon is affected, whether you need imaging, which exercises are safe now, and what strength or movement tests should be passed before returning to sport.

Questions people ask
Can a groin strain hurt while walking?
Yes. A moderate or more severe strain may make ordinary steps uncomfortable, particularly when the leg is pushed outward or the stride is longer.
When can I return to sport?
Return should be gradual after walking, strengthening, and sport-specific movements are comfortable and your clinician agrees that control has returned.
