What does genomic tumour profiling treat?

A laboratory examines genetic features in a tumour sample, usually tissue from a biopsy or an earlier operation. The results may show changes linked with how a cancer grows or responds to medicines. Profiling can help personalise discussions about targeted therapy, immunotherapy, clinical options, or the value of standard treatment; it does not replace examination, scans, pathology, or the oncology team’s judgement.

The approach may be considered in cancers such as breast cancer, bowel cancer, and lung cancer, and when the original site of a cancer is uncertain. A result may find a change with an available treatment, a change with no established treatment, or no useful change. Results are not the same as an inherited genetic test.

Ask which sample will be tested, whether it is adequate, what genes or markers are included, and how long interpretation may take. Discuss whether the result could alter your treatment plan and whether a second sample is needed. Bring the report to your oncology appointment; a finding is interpreted alongside cancer type, stage, previous treatments, general health, and your preferences.

Contact your oncology team promptly if you develop worsening pain, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, confusion, or a fever during cancer treatment. These symptoms need clinical assessment and should not be attributed to a profiling result. Arrange routine follow-up to discuss the report, especially before starting, stopping, or changing anticancer medicine.
