What does facial swelling feel like with chronic kidney disease?

Facial Swelling is a common presentation of Chronic Kidney Disease. When kidney function changes, the body may retain extra salt and fluid. This can cause puffiness around the eyelids and face, tight rings or shoes, or swelling in the ankles and legs. The skin is often not hot or intensely painful. Facial puffiness alone cannot identify the cause; medicines, allergies, sleep position and other conditions can also change the face.

If you have known kidney disease, contact your kidney clinician about new or increasing swelling, changes in urination, weight gain, or a blood pressure concern. Take medicines as prescribed and do not start water tablets, supplements or a strict fluid restriction on your own. Keep a note of when swelling appears and whether it affects the legs or hands as well.

Get urgent help for facial swelling with shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, severe weakness, very little urine, sudden vision changes, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Rapidly worsening fluid retention may need prompt assessment, particularly in someone with established kidney disease or heart problems.
