What does easy bruising feel like with myelodysplastic syndromes?

A bruise may begin as a sensitive or sore patch, then change colour as it heals. You may notice marks on the arms, legs, or other areas after contact that would not normally leave a mark. Some bruises are painless and found incidentally. Myelodysplastic syndromes can affect blood-cell production, including the platelets that help bleeding stop, so easy bruising can occur alongside small pinpoint spots, nosebleeds, or bleeding from the gums. The symptom does not identify its cause on its own; medicines, injuries, and other blood or health conditions can also contribute.

Record when new bruises appear, where they are, whether they followed an injury, and whether they are changing. Protect your skin from knocks, use a soft toothbrush, and avoid starting aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician has advised them. Tell your doctor about prescription medicines, supplements, alcohol use, bleeding from other sites, tiredness, fever, or repeated infections. A clinician may review your medicines and arrange blood tests to assess blood-cell counts.

Arrange medical assessment if bruising is new, spreading, frequent, or accompanied by bleeding that is difficult to stop. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, vomiting blood, black or bloody stools, severe weakness, fainting, confusion, a severe headache after an injury, or a rapidly worsening illness. Fever with marked tiredness or repeated infections also deserves prompt medical attention because it can occur with problems affecting blood-cell production.
