What does easy bruising feel like with leukaemia?

Bruises can appear after a small bump, in several areas, or without a remembered injury. They may be tender, swollen, or painless, and their colour can shift as they heal. Leukaemia can disrupt production of healthy blood cells, so easy bruising may occur with unusual tiredness, pale skin, repeated infections, fever, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or tiny red-purple spots. Those symptoms have other possible explanations, so the pattern needs a clinician’s assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Arrange a prompt appointment if bruising is new, frequent, unexplained, or accompanied by bleeding or marked fatigue. Record when marks appear, where they are, whether they follow injury, and any fever or infection symptoms. Tell the clinician about medicines and supplements, including products bought without a prescription. Blood tests can help assess blood-cell counts and guide further evaluation. Avoid activities with a high risk of injury until you have received personal advice.

Seek emergency help for bleeding that does not stop with pressure, blood in vomit or stool, black stools, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, or a severe headache. A fever with a very unwell appearance also needs urgent medical advice, particularly when infection-fighting blood cells may be affected. Rapidly spreading bruises or new heavy bleeding should not wait for a routine appointment.
