What does easy bruising feel like with aplastic anaemia?

A bruise may appear after a light bump or without a remembered injury. It can feel tender, sore, or mildly swollen at first, then change colour as it fades. You may notice several bruises on the arms, legs, or other areas exposed to everyday knocks. Aplastic anaemia can reduce the blood cells that help control bleeding, so easy bruising may occur alongside tiny red or purple spots, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or unusually heavy menstrual bleeding. These features do not identify the cause by themselves.

Arrange a medical assessment if bruising is new, spreading, frequent, or accompanied by tiredness, breathlessness, repeated infections, or bleeding. A clinician may ask when the bruises began, whether injuries were involved, and which medicines or supplements you take. Blood tests can check blood-cell levels and help guide the next step. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Protect the skin from knocks, use a soft toothbrush, and avoid activities likely to cause injury until you have received individual guidance.

Seek urgent care for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure, vomiting blood, black or bloody stools, severe weakness, fainting, confusion, or a severe headache after an injury. Get prompt help for fever with feeling very unwell, because reduced blood-cell production can affect infection defence. If bruising is rapidly increasing or you develop heavy bleeding, do not wait for a routine appointment.
