During atrial fibrillation, the heartbeat becomes irregular and may be faster than usual. Some people notice palpitations, breathlessness, tiredness, chest discomfort, or reduced exercise tolerance as well. Dizziness is not specific to atrial fibrillation, so symptoms need clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Stop what you are doing and sit or lie somewhere safe. Note when the episode started, whether your pulse feels irregular, and what other symptoms occur. Do not drive while dizzy. If you have already been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, follow your prescribed plan and do not change medication on your own. Arrange prompt medical review for new, repeated, or persistent episodes.

Call emergency services for dizziness with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, new confusion, or a severe sudden headache. These signs can indicate a serious heart or circulation problem and should not wait for a routine appointment.
