What does difficulty swallowing feel like with throat cancer?

Difficulty swallowing is a very common presentation of Throat Cancer and may feel like food catches, scrapes or cannot pass smoothly. It can be painful, persistent or gradually more noticeable, sometimes with a sensation on one side of the throat.

You may have pain when swallowing, a lump-like feeling, persistent hoarseness, a sore throat that does not settle, ear pain without an ear problem, or a neck lump. These signs can have causes other than cancer, including infection, reflux or irritation, but ongoing changes need examination.

Contact a clinician if swallowing difficulty lasts, worsens or is accompanied by voice change, a neck lump or unexplained appetite change. Explain whether the problem affects solids, liquids or both, and whether the sensation is painful or obstructive. An examination can guide any further tests.

Seek emergency help if you cannot swallow saliva, food is lodged, or breathing becomes difficult. Prompt attention is also needed for coughing or choking with fluids, bleeding from the mouth or throat, severe weakness or rapidly worsening swelling.
