Short answer

Difficulty Sleeping is a very common presentation of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, often felt as repeated waking, gasping, snoring, or unrefreshing sleep.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Night clues
Snoring, breathing pauses, gasping or repeated waking
Morning clues
Dry mouth, headache or unrefreshing sleep
Safety
Do not drive when dangerously sleepy

What may happen at night

You may not remember every awakening. Instead, you might wake with a dry mouth, headache, a startled feeling, or the sense that sleep was restless. A bed partner may notice loud snoring, pauses in breathing, choking or gasping. During the day, you may feel unrefreshed, sleepy, irritable or unable to concentrate. Most people with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea notice difficulty sleeping, but snoring or poor sleep alone does not identify the cause.

In this condition, the upper airway narrows or closes repeatedly during sleep, briefly disturbing normal breathing and sleep. A clinician may ask about your night-time pattern, daytime alertness, medicines, alcohol, nasal symptoms and other health conditions. Assessment may include a sleep study arranged through an appropriate service.

Useful next steps

Ask a bed partner what they observe, if possible, and record snoring, gasping, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness. Keep regular sleep times, avoid alcohol near bedtime, and do not drive when you feel likely to nod off. Sleeping on your side may help some people, but it does not replace assessment when breathing pauses are suspected.

Arrange a medical appointment if you have witnessed pauses, repeated gasping, persistent loud snoring or unrefreshing sleep. Bring a list of medicines and describe whether sleepiness affects work, driving or conversations.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help if breathing difficulty continues while awake, you develop chest pain, fainting, severe confusion or blue lips, or you cannot stay awake safely. Seek prompt advice when daytime sleepiness affects driving or you have repeated night-time choking episodes.

Questions for your doctor

Could my snoring, gasping or daytime sleepiness suggest Obstructive Sleep Apnoea? Would a sleep study be suitable? What can I do about driving safety while waiting? Could nasal symptoms, medicines or alcohol be worsening the pattern?

Questions people ask

Can obstructive sleep apnoea happen without remembering waking?

Yes. Breathing interruptions can cause brief arousals that you do not recall, while still leaving sleep fragmented and unrefreshing.

Is snoring alone enough to diagnose it?

No. Snoring has several causes. A clinician considers breathing pauses, gasping, daytime sleepiness and other features, and may arrange sleep assessment.
