What does dark patches on skin feel like with tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor is a superficial yeast-related skin condition. Its patches may be lighter, darker, pink, or tan than nearby skin. They often occur on the upper chest, back, shoulders, neck, or upper arms, where several patches can join together.

The surface may have very fine flakes that become easier to see when the skin is gently rubbed. Some people notice mild itching, especially with heat or sweating, while others feel no irritation at all. The colour can remain uneven after treatment because the skin needs time to restore its usual pigment; that lingering colour does not by itself prove the infection is still active.

Keep the area cool and dry when possible, change out of damp clothing, and avoid sharing towels or clothing until you have received clear advice. Do not scrape the patches or apply random steroid creams, as this can alter the appearance and complicate assessment. A clinician or pharmacist can recommend an appropriate antifungal treatment and explain how to use it over the affected skin.

Seek review if the rash is painful, very inflamed, rapidly spreading, oozing, or associated with fever, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Arrange follow-up when treatment has finished but scale or itch persists. A dark patch without scale can have many causes, so a persistent or changing mark should be examined rather than treated repeatedly on guesswork.
