What does cyst removal treat?

A cyst is a sac beneath the skin that may contain keratin or other material. During removal, the area is usually numbed and the clinician makes an opening to take out the cyst, often including its wall or capsule. Removing the capsule can help limit recurrence, although no procedure can promise that a cyst will never return.

Epidermoid cysts commonly occur on the skin, while pilar cysts often develop on the scalp. A red, tender, swollen cyst may be inflamed or infected, and the immediate plan may differ from removal of a quiet cyst. Do not squeeze it, because pressure can worsen inflammation and injure nearby skin.

Tell the clinician about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, and previous raised scars. Afterward, keep the wound covered as advised, avoid rubbing the site, and follow instructions for washing and suture care. A small scar is possible, with its appearance influenced by the cyst's size, site, and your healing pattern.

Get medical advice for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or difficulty moving the nearby area. After the procedure, contact the clinic for persistent bleeding, wound separation, worsening warmth, or discharge. A lump that changes or returns also deserves review.

Ask what type of cyst you have, whether it is inflamed, whether the capsule can be removed, and whether the tissue will be examined. Ask about wound care, stitches, likely scar location, and signs that should prompt an urgent call.
