What does cough feel like with tuberculosis?

A tuberculosis-related cough may start gradually rather than appearing suddenly. It can be dry or produce mucus, and repeated coughing may leave the throat or chest feeling irritated. Some people also feel tired, feverish, sweaty during sleep, or notice reduced appetite. These features can occur with other respiratory illnesses, so the sensation alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a medical assessment if a cough persists, keeps returning, or comes with unexplained tiredness, fever, night sweats, weight loss, or contact with someone who has tuberculosis. A clinician may ask about symptoms and exposure, listen to your chest, and arrange tests such as a chest image or a sample of mucus. Avoid sharing indoor air closely with others if tuberculosis is suspected, and follow local medical advice about testing and precautions.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, or coughing up more than a small amount of blood. If breathing is rapidly worsening, call emergency services. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these signs are present.
