What does cough feel like with croup?

Cough is a very common presentation of Croup, often sounding harsh, dry, and bark-like. It may come in bursts and can make a child’s throat feel irritated or tight. The sound may resemble a seal’s bark, particularly when the child cries or becomes upset.

Croup causes swelling around the voice box and upper airway. That narrowed area changes the sound of air and produces the distinctive cough. A hoarse voice is common, and some children make a high-pitched noise when breathing in, called stridor. Cough is also seen with many other childhood illnesses, so its sound alone cannot identify the cause.

Keep your child calm and sitting upright, because crying can make noisy breathing worse. Offer small, frequent drinks if swallowing is comfortable. Avoid smoke and strong fragrances. Watch how your child breathes when settled, rather than judging severity only by the cough. A clinician may recommend treatment to reduce airway swelling.

Seek urgent medical help if your child has stridor while resting, struggling to breathe, ribs pulling in, blue or grey lips, unusual sleepiness, drooling, or difficulty swallowing. Arrange prompt medical advice if the cough is worsening, keeps disturbing sleep, or comes with fever or reduced drinking. Infants and children with breathing conditions may need earlier assessment.

Ask whether the breathing noise is stridor, whether treatment is needed, and what signs should prompt immediate help. Tell the clinician when the cough began, whether it is worse at night, and whether your child has fever, poor drinking, or breathing difficulty.
