What does cough feel like with COPD?

The cough may be a regular throat-clearing habit or a deeper cough that brings up sputum. Mucus can feel sticky and hard to shift. Breathlessness during walking, wheeze, chest tightness, and reduced stamina may accompany it. Morning coughing can happen when mucus has collected overnight. Some people notice a stable daily pattern, while a flare brings a clear change in cough, sputum, or breathing.

Cough is common in COPD, but it is not specific to COPD. A new or changing cough deserves assessment, particularly in someone with smoking exposure, known lung disease, or repeated chest infections.

Use prescribed inhalers exactly as directed and keep your reliever accessible if one has been prescribed. Follow your written action plan during a flare. Avoid smoke, vaping aerosols, dust, and cold air when these trigger coughing. Gentle activity within your limits and techniques taught in pulmonary rehabilitation may help clear mucus and maintain function.

Contact your respiratory team or clinician when cough, sputum amount or colour, wheeze, or breathlessness changes from your usual pattern. Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness at rest, inability to speak in full sentences, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or chest pain. Coughing blood also needs prompt medical advice.

Ask how to distinguish your usual symptoms from a flare, whether your inhaler technique is effective, and when to use your action plan. Discuss vaccinations, pulmonary rehabilitation, smoking support, and mucus-clearance options if relevant to you.
