What does cough feel like with bronchiectasis?

The cough can sound deep or wet rather than dry. Mucus may be thick, difficult to clear, or yellow or green; its colour alone cannot identify the cause of a flare. Repeated coughing may leave the chest or ribs feeling sore and can cause tiredness. Some people cough more in the morning because mucus collects while lying down. Wheezing, breathlessness, or repeated chest infections can occur alongside the cough.

Cough is common in Bronchiectasis, but a cough by itself does not establish the diagnosis. A clinician may consider your history, listen to your chest, and arrange tests when needed.

Drink enough fluid for your usual health needs, unless a clinician has advised fluid restriction. Record changes in mucus amount, colour, smell, breathlessness, fever, or blood so you can describe them clearly.

Arrange medical advice if the cough or mucus changes noticeably, chest infections keep returning, or breathlessness is worsening. Seek urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, or coughing up more than a small streak of blood.
