What does cough feel like with allergic rhinitis?

The cough is often dry, repetitive, and irritating rather than deep in the chest. You may feel mucus sliding down the back of the throat, need to clear your throat, or notice a scratchy sensation. Sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, watery eyes, and symptoms that flare around dust, pollen, pets, or mould can occur at the same time.

Allergic rhinitis can present with cough, but infections, reflux, asthma, and other causes can also produce it. A pattern linked to exposure is useful information, not a diagnosis by itself.

Limit contact with known triggers where practical, wash your face after outdoor exposure, and keep sleeping areas free from dust build-up. Saline nasal rinsing may clear irritants when done with appropriately prepared water. A pharmacist can explain antihistamines or nasal treatments and how to use a nasal spray correctly. Avoid using decongestant sprays for longer than advised.

Arrange a review if the cough continues despite controlling allergy symptoms, interrupts sleep, or limits exercise. Seek urgent care for marked breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives with breathing symptoms, chest pain, or coughing blood. These signs may indicate a problem beyond nasal allergy.
