What does constipation feel like with diverticular disease?

Short answer
Constipation is a common presentation of Diverticular Disease and may involve hard stools, straining, bloating or incomplete emptying.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Bowel change
- Firm stool or incomplete emptying
- Other sensations
- Bloating, pressure or cramping
What the sensation can include
You may feel pressure in the lower abdomen, pass small or firm stools, or still feel the bowel has not emptied. Diverticular disease involves small pouches in the bowel wall; changes in bowel habit can occur when the bowel is sensitive or stool moves slowly. Bloating or cramping may come and go. Constipation alone cannot show whether diverticular disease is present, and symptoms can overlap with other bowel problems.
Practical steps
Increase fibre gradually with foods such as fruit, vegetables, pulses and whole grains, and drink enough fluid unless you have been told to restrict it. Move gently each day and allow time without straining when you use the toilet. Keep track of stool changes, abdominal discomfort and foods that seem to worsen symptoms. A clinician or pharmacist can recommend a suitable laxative if food and fluid changes are not enough.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician for new or persistent constipation, repeated abdominal pain, or a change in bowel habit that does not improve. Seek urgent care for constant or severe abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, a swollen abdomen, heavy rectal bleeding, or inability to pass stool or gas.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit uncomplicated diverticular disease or need testing, how quickly to increase fibre, and which bowel medicine is appropriate. Discuss any medicines, previous bowel episodes, bleeding, weight change or family history that may affect the assessment.

Questions people ask
Can fibre make bloating worse at first?
It can, particularly when increased quickly; gradual changes with adequate fluid are usually easier to tolerate.
Is severe pain part of ordinary constipation?
Severe or constant pain, especially with fever or vomiting, needs urgent assessment rather than home treatment.
