What does cone biopsy treat?

Short answer
Cone biopsy removes and examines a cone-shaped area of the cervix containing abnormal cells, including some high-grade changes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What is removed
- A cone-shaped section of cervical tissue
- Main reasons
- Remove abnormal cells or obtain a deeper specimen
- Follow-up
- Pathology results and cervical monitoring
Why it may be recommended
A cone biopsy, also called cervical conisation, may be advised when colposcopy and a smaller biopsy cannot show the full area of concern, or when cell changes extend into the cervical canal. The removed tissue is examined to identify the type and severity of the change and whether the edges appear clear.
It can treat cervical dysplasia by removing affected tissue. It may also help diagnose or manage an early cervical cancer, but the plan depends on the tissue result, examination, and whether disease extends beyond the cone. Bleeding after sex is not a diagnosis of cancer and should be assessed in context.
Preparing and recovering
Tell the surgical team about pregnancy, allergies, medicines that affect bleeding, and any plans for pregnancy. Follow instructions about food, drink, transport, and activity. Afterward, watery or blood-stained discharge and cramping may occur. Avoid anything placed in the vagina, including sex and tampons, for the period advised by your clinician.
Attend follow-up so the pathology result and future cervical monitoring are clear. Loop excision of the cervix may be an alternative for some cell changes; the appropriate choice depends on the size and position of the abnormal area and the need for a deeper specimen.
When to seek care
Contact your care team urgently if bleeding is heavy, you pass large clots, pain becomes severe, you develop fever, or discharge smells unpleasant. Seek emergency help if you feel faint, unusually weak, or short of breath. Do not wait for the scheduled follow-up when these symptoms occur.
Questions for your doctor
Ask why a cone biopsy is preferred, what area will be removed, how the result will guide treatment, and when the report is expected. Discuss effects on the cervix, future pregnancy, bleeding precautions, and the exact symptoms that require urgent review.

Questions people ask
Does a cone biopsy remove cervical cancer?
It can remove some early disease or provide tissue for diagnosis, but treatment depends on the pathology result and whether disease extends beyond the sampled area.
Is cone biopsy the same as colposcopy?
No. Colposcopy examines the cervix with magnification; cone biopsy is a surgical procedure that removes tissue for examination and possible treatment.
