What does bowel resection treat?

During a colectomy, a surgeon removes the affected part of the colon and examines nearby tissue as part of the cancer operation. The healthy ends may be joined, or a temporary or longer-term opening called a stoma may be created when joining them is not suitable. The extent of surgery depends on the affected area, the condition, and the findings during planning.

Your surgical team may review scans, colonoscopy findings, tissue results, medicines, and general health before recommending surgery. Ask whether the operation is open or keyhole surgery, what section may be removed, and whether a stoma is possible. Follow the preparation instructions about eating, drinking, bowel preparation, and medicines exactly as provided.

Contact the surgical team for worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, increasing redness or discharge from a wound, or a stoma that changes colour or stops working with other symptoms. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, or heavy bleeding.
