What does chest pain feel like with shingles?

Shingles affects a nerve and the nearby skin. Pain often follows a narrow band on one side of the chest and may make clothing or light touch feel uncomfortable. It can start before a rash, so the skin may initially look normal.

A cluster of fluid-filled spots or a painful rash may appear later in the same area. Fever, headache, or feeling unwell can accompany it. Chest pain without this pattern can have other causes, including emergencies, so do not rely on the rash pattern alone.

Contact a clinician promptly if you develop one-sided burning chest pain, tingling, or a new rash. Early assessment can help determine whether antiviral treatment is appropriate. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid scratching, and cover lesions if they are oozing.

Avoid close skin contact with people who are pregnant, newborn, or immunocompromised if you have uncovered blisters. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain relief is suitable for you.

Seek emergency help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Seek urgent medical review for a rash near the eye or ear, facial weakness, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness.
