How this pain may present

A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot blocking a blood vessel in the lungs. Pain may start suddenly, sit to one side, and become sharper when breathing in or coughing. Breathlessness, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, sweating, or a cough may occur at the same time.

The pattern is not always typical: some people feel pressure or discomfort rather than a sharp stitch. Chest pain cannot establish the cause by itself. A clot can be serious even when pain seems moderate, so sudden symptoms deserve prompt attention.

What to do if you notice it

If chest pain begins suddenly with breathlessness, weakness, faintness, or a racing heartbeat, stop what you are doing and seek emergency help. Do not drive yourself. Note when symptoms began and tell clinicians about recent surgery, prolonged immobility, pregnancy, or a previous clot if any apply.

Do not massage a painful swollen leg or take someone else’s blood-thinning medicine. Emergency clinicians can assess your breathing and circulation and arrange appropriate tests.
