What does chest pain feel like with pneumonia?

Inflammation around the lungs can irritate the lining of the chest. Pain may stay on one side or a particular area and become more noticeable with a deep breath, coughing, sneezing, or movement. Some people describe tenderness, an ache, or a stitch-like pain rather than pressure.

Pneumonia can also cause cough, fever or chills, tiredness, and shortness of breath. Chest discomfort can have many causes, so its feel alone cannot identify pneumonia. A clinician may listen to your lungs and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, and record when the pain appears and what makes it worse. Avoid smoking and strenuous activity while you feel unwell. Arrange medical advice promptly if you have a new cough with fever, breathing difficulty, or chest pain that persists.

Take medicines only as directed for you. Do not use leftover antibiotics; treatment depends on the cause and your examination. A clinician can advise on pain relief and whether you need testing.

Get emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening chest pain, marked difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or inability to stay awake. Seek urgent assessment if breathing becomes harder, you cough blood, or you feel suddenly much worse.
