What does cervical fusion treat?

A surgeon removes a damaged disc or other tissue when it is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord, then joins the nearby vertebrae so that segment can heal in a stable position. It may be considered for cervical myelopathy, which involves spinal cord compression, or cervical radiculopathy, in which a nerve root is irritated or compressed. Cervical spondylosis can contribute to either problem through age-related changes in discs and joints. Fusion does not restore a worn disc; its purpose is to remove pressure and limit painful movement at the treated level.

The approach, number of levels, and use of a PEEK spinal cage or plate and screws depend on scans, symptoms, examination findings, and overall health.

Bring a list of medicines, previous neck treatments, and symptoms such as hand clumsiness, numbness, weakness, or balance changes. Ask how the scan findings match your examination and whether non-surgical care has been given enough time. After surgery, follow wound, movement, lifting, and rehabilitation instructions closely; recovery plans vary with the levels treated and the reason for surgery.

Seek urgent medical assessment for new or worsening weakness, trouble walking, loss of hand coordination, or loss of bladder or bowel control. After surgery, promptly report fever, increasing wound redness or drainage, severe swallowing or breathing difficulty, or sudden worsening arm pain.
