What does caesarean section treat?

Reasons can include a Breech Baby, labour that is not progressing safely, concerns about the baby's condition, placenta-related problems, or serious pregnancy complications such as Eclampsia or HELLP Syndrome. It may be planned before labour or recommended during labour if circumstances change.

A vaginal delivery, induction of labour, or External Cephalic Version may be considered in some situations. The choice depends on examination findings, the baby's position, previous operations, the stage of labour, and the wellbeing of both patients.

Your maternity team will explain the reason, anaesthesia, incision, monitoring, feeding plans, and expected recovery. After birth, gentle movement, wound care, prescribed pain relief, and help with lifting can support recovery. Postnatal Physiotherapy may help with movement, scar comfort, or abdominal and pelvic-floor rehabilitation.

After surgery, contact your maternity team promptly for increasing wound redness, opening, discharge, worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fever, breathlessness, chest pain, or a painful swollen leg. Sudden severe symptoms require emergency care.

Ask why surgery is advised, whether another birth option is reasonable, how the incision will be managed, which activities to avoid, and whom to contact if recovery changes.
