What does buttock pain feel like with sciatica?

Sciatic pain may begin in the lower back or deep buttock and travel through the back of the thigh, calf, or foot. It can be sharp, hot, tingling, or shock-like rather than simply sore. Coughing, sneezing, prolonged sitting, bending, or lifting may increase it. Some people also notice numbness or weakness in part of the leg or foot. The pattern can be intermittent, and the painful path may be different from one person to another.

Sciatica refers to irritation or compression affecting the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots. Buttock pain can also arise from muscles, joints, or tendons, so an examination helps identify the source.

Change positions often and continue gentle movement that does not worsen leg symptoms. Avoid lifting or bending repeatedly during a flare, and use a comfortable posture for sitting. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess strength, sensation, reflexes, and movement before recommending exercises. Do not ignore increasing weakness, even if the pain itself is settling.

Seek urgent medical care for new bladder or bowel difficulty, numbness around the groin, or weakness affecting walking. Prompt assessment is also needed for severe pain after trauma, fever with back pain, or rapidly worsening leg symptoms. Arrange routine care when pain persists or disrupts sleep and normal activity.

Ask which nerve area may be involved, whether your strength and sensation are normal, and which positions or activities to limit temporarily. Ask how to recognise meaningful weakness and when a follow-up review is needed.
