Short answer

Buttock Pain is a very common presentation of Piriformis Syndrome, often described as a deep ache or tight feeling that may send burning or tingling down the leg.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The sensation and pattern

Pain is usually felt deep in one side of the buttock, sometimes with tenderness around the muscle. Sitting for a long time, driving, running, climbing, or turning the hip may aggravate it. Irritation near the sciatic nerve can add pins and needles, numbness, or an electric feeling through the back of the thigh and sometimes farther down the leg. Symptoms can vary with posture and do not always appear together.

Piriformis syndrome is one possible explanation for buttock and leg symptoms. A back problem, hip disorder, or another nerve issue can feel similar, so a physical assessment is needed for a clear diagnosis.

Practical steps

Break up prolonged sitting with brief standing or walking, and avoid movements that reproduce strong radiating pain. Gentle activity is often preferable to complete bed rest. A physiotherapist may check hip rotation, muscle control, spinal movement, and nerve sensitivity before choosing stretches or strengthening exercises. Stop an exercise that causes increasing numbness or weakness and discuss a safer progression.

When to seek care

Book an appointment if symptoms persist, interfere with sitting or sleep, or include recurring tingling. Seek urgent help for new or worsening leg weakness, numbness around the groin, or difficulty controlling urine or bowel movements. Severe pain after trauma or fever with a hot swollen area also needs prompt review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the nerve symptoms fit piriformis syndrome or may arise from the lower back, what sitting changes are useful, and which exercises are appropriate for your current irritability. Ask how weakness or spreading numbness should be monitored.

Questions people ask

Can piriformis syndrome cause tingling?

It can when nearby nerve tissue becomes irritated, although tingling also occurs with other back and nerve conditions.

Should I stretch through sharp leg pain?

No. Stop if stretching increases sharp or spreading symptoms and ask a clinician to tailor the exercise.
