What does brittle nails feel like with brittle nail syndrome?

Brittle nails may catch on fabric because the free edge is rough, layered, or peeling. They can split lengthwise, flake across the surface, or break with ordinary pressure. The nail plate may feel thinner than before and may bend more easily. Some people notice tenderness when a split reaches deeper, while many have no pain unless the surrounding skin is irritated.

Most people with Brittle Nail Syndrome notice brittle nails, but similar changes can follow frequent wetting and drying, cleaning products, nail cosmetics, trauma, skin disease, or other health conditions. The feel of the nail does not establish one diagnosis by itself. A clinician can inspect the plate and nearby skin for clues.

Keep nails short and file rough edges in one direction. Wear gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products, and moisturise the nails and surrounding skin after washing. Avoid picking layers, biting nails, aggressive buffing, and repeated removal of artificial products while the plate is splitting. Do not pull off a loose section; trim it carefully or ask for help if it is painful.

Arrange a review if several nails change, the problem persists, or the nail becomes painful, discoloured, lifted, swollen, or surrounded by inflamed skin. Seek prompt care for pus, rapidly increasing redness, or significant throbbing. A new change in one nail after injury may need a different assessment from longstanding changes in many nails.
