What does breast ultrasound treat?

A clinician moves gel and a handheld probe over the breast. The images can help distinguish a fluid-filled cyst from a solid area and show how tissue is positioned. Findings may fit conditions such as Fibroadenoma, Fibrocystic Breast Changes, Duct Ectasia, or a Breast Abscess, but an ultrasound image alone does not always establish the diagnosis.

If an area needs closer examination, the next step may be a Mammogram, Breast Biopsy, or Core Needle Biopsy. Your clinician chooses the pathway based on your age, symptoms, examination, and the scan finding.

Ask when and how you will receive the report and whether the finding needs monitoring, another scan, or tissue sampling. Bring details about when a lump appeared, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and any discharge, fever, or previous breast imaging.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new breast lump, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or a change in nipple position. Seek urgent care when breast swelling or redness is accompanied by fever, escalating pain, or feeling unwell, because infection such as a Breast Abscess may need treatment.

Ask what the scan showed, whether it is clearly fluid-filled or solid, whether you need a Mammogram or biopsy, and which changes should bring you back sooner.
