What does a breast lump feel like with breast cancer?

Most people with Breast Cancer notice breast lump that may feel firm or hard, with an irregular shape or less movement than nearby tissue. Some breast cancer lumps are painless, while others are tender. A change in size, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, unusual discharge, or a new underarm lump can also need assessment.

These features are not a diagnosis. Benign breast changes can also feel firm, and some cancers do not have a distinct lump. Examination and appropriate imaging, followed by tissue sampling when needed, are used to find the cause.

Arrange an appointment for any new or persistent lump, even if it is not painful. Note when you first noticed it, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and any skin or nipple changes. Avoid repeatedly pressing it, which can make the area sore, and take your questions to the appointment.

Seek prompt assessment for a new lump with skin dimpling, redness that does not settle, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or an underarm swelling. Seek urgent care if the breast is rapidly changing with severe pain, fever, or marked illness.

Ask which examination or imaging is appropriate, whether a Breast Biopsy is needed, and when you will receive the result. Ask which changes should lead you to return sooner and how follow-up will be arranged.
