What does BRCA genetic testing treat?

A BRCA1 or BRCA2 test examines genetic material for changes associated with increased risk of several cancers, including ovarian cancer. The result may be relevant to a person who has cancer, a person with a strong family pattern, or relatives of someone with a known BRCA gene mutation. Testing can help a team choose closer surveillance, discuss risk-reducing options or consider treatments that work differently when certain repair pathways are altered.

A result can be positive, negative or uncertain, and its meaning depends on personal and family history. Genetic counselling before and after testing helps explain possible findings, family implications and choices. Next-generation sequencing may be used as the laboratory method, but the test itself is an assessment, not a medicine or operation.

Ask whether testing should begin with an affected relative when that is possible, and bring information about cancers in close relatives. Discuss how results could change screening or prevention for you and what they may mean for family members. If a pathogenic BRCA change is found, the team may discuss specialist surveillance, genetic counselling and options such as risk-reducing mastectomy. Do not make a preventive decision from a result without professional interpretation.

BRCA testing is not an emergency test. Contact your care team promptly if you have a new breast or pelvic symptom, unexplained bleeding, persistent abdominal swelling or pain, or a cancer diagnosis and need treatment planning. Urgent symptoms such as severe pain, fainting or heavy bleeding need immediate medical assessment regardless of genetic testing.
