What does blurred vision feel like with migraine?

Blurred Vision is a common presentation of Migraine and may feel like hazy, unfocused or shimmering sight. You may find that words are difficult to read, lights seem unusually bright, or part of your view appears distorted. These visual changes can occur before or during head pain and may settle as the migraine episode eases.

Migraine can temporarily alter how the brain processes visual information. Some people notice blurred vision in both eyes, while others describe moving zigzags, flashing lights, blind patches or difficulty focusing. Covering one eye at a time can help you describe the change, but it does not diagnose the cause. New visual symptoms deserve medical attention because migraine is only one possible explanation.

Stop driving and move to a quiet, dim room. Rest your eyes, drink water if you can, and follow the migraine plan given by your clinician. Note when the visual change began, how long it lasted, whether one or both eyes were affected, and whether headache, nausea or light sensitivity followed. Arrange a review if episodes are new, changing or becoming more frequent.

Seek emergency help for sudden vision loss, new double vision, facial drooping, weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting or a severe unfamiliar headache. Prompt assessment is also needed if the change affects only one eye, follows an eye injury, or does not clear as expected. Do not wait for a typical migraine pattern when neurological symptoms appear.

Ask whether the pattern fits migraine aura, whether your eyes need examination, and which symptoms should trigger emergency care. Bring a record of timing, triggers, medicines, headache features and any loss of vision.
