What does blood in stool feel like with bowel cancer?

Bleeding from the bowel can be bright red, dark red, or make the stool look very dark. Some people notice blood on paper or in the bowl; others notice only a change found during testing. Bleeding itself may not hurt. Depending on where a tumour is located and how it affects the bowel, there may also be a change in bowel frequency or stool shape, a feeling of incomplete emptying, abdominal discomfort, tiredness, or unexplained weight loss.

These symptoms have several possible causes, including non-cancerous conditions. The direction matters: blood in stool is a common presentation of Bowel Cancer, but blood in stool does not by itself establish that diagnosis. A clinician may use an examination, stool testing, blood tests, or a camera test of the bowel to work out the cause.

Record the colour and amount you see, whether it is on the surface or mixed through the stool, and any related bowel changes. Book a medical appointment for new, repeated, or unexplained bleeding, even when you feel otherwise well. Bring a list of medicines, especially blood thinners, and mention any close family history of bowel conditions. Do not delay an assessment by trying to judge the cause from colour alone.

Go to urgent care for a large amount of blood, bleeding that does not stop, black tar-like stool with weakness, fainting, dizziness, severe abdominal pain, fever, or vomiting. Seek prompt review if bleeding is accompanied by persistent tiredness, a sustained bowel-habit change, or difficulty passing stool and gas. Emergency symptoms can reflect significant blood loss or a bowel complication and should not wait for a routine appointment.
