What do bladder or bowel changes with back pain feel like with a herniated disc?

A herniated disc can irritate or compress spinal nerves. Bladder changes may feel like reduced awareness of a full bladder, difficulty starting or maintaining urine flow, incomplete emptying, or unexpected leakage. Bowel symptoms may involve a changed urge, reduced control, or altered sensation when passing stool. Back pain may travel into the buttock or leg, with tingling, numbness, or weakness. Numbness around the genitals, buttocks, or inner thighs is especially concerning because it can indicate involvement of the nerves serving the saddle region. These symptoms cannot be sorted reliably by sensation alone and should not be monitored for several days.

Arrange emergency medical assessment immediately for new bladder or bowel changes with back pain. Explain the changes clearly, including whether you cannot pass urine, are leaking, or have lost normal sensation. Mention leg weakness, saddle numbness, recent lifting or injury, and the time symptoms began. Avoid driving if weakness or numbness affects your legs.

Go to an emergency department for urinary retention, new incontinence, loss of bowel control, saddle numbness, or worsening weakness. Severe pain with fever or after an injury also warrants immediate evaluation. A clinician may perform a neurological examination and arrange urgent imaging to check whether nerves are compressed.

Ask whether the disc is affecting nerves that control the bladder, bowel, or legs, whether urgent imaging is required, and which symptoms mean you should return immediately. Ask how movement, pain relief, and follow-up should be managed while the diagnosis is clarified.
