What does bisphosphonate therapy treat?

Bisphosphonates reduce the activity of cells that remove old bone. This can help maintain bone strength and lower the chance of further fragility fractures when osteoporosis is present. They may also be used after a hip fracture or vertebral compression fracture when bone weakness contributed to the injury. In Paget's disease of bone, treatment can calm unusually active bone turnover and help manage related bone pain or deformity. The medicine does not repair an acute fracture by itself; a fracture still needs assessment and a treatment plan for alignment, movement, and rehabilitation.

A clinician may review your fracture history, symptoms, kidney function, dental health, and other medicines before choosing a bisphosphonate. A DEXA scan may help assess bone mineral density, but the decision also considers age, previous fractures, and the likely cause of bone loss. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed because tablets and infusions have different instructions. Tell the treating team about swallowing problems, planned dental procedures, thigh or groin pain, and new jaw symptoms.

Seek urgent assessment after a fall that causes severe hip, back, or groin pain, inability to bear weight, or a new change in limb position. Contact your clinician promptly for difficulty swallowing, severe heartburn, new thigh pain, or jaw pain or exposed bone. Breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or widespread rash after a dose needs immediate medical attention.

Ask which bone condition the medicine is treating, whether a tablet or infusion fits your health needs, how long the plan may continue, and how your response will be monitored. Ask what to do if you miss a dose and whether your dental care or supplements need adjustment.
