What does bedwetting feel like with urinary tract infection?

Bedwetting is a common presentation of Urinary Tract Infection, sometimes accompanied by urgency, burning, or lower tummy discomfort. A child may wake wet, rush to the toilet during the day, pass small amounts, or say that urinating stings. A previously dry child with new wetting should be assessed for urinary symptoms.

Inflammation in the bladder can create a sudden, difficult-to-ignore urge to urinate. The child may clutch their lower tummy, need the toilet repeatedly, or have urine that smells different or looks cloudy. Fever, feeling unwell, or pain in the back or side can suggest that infection is affecting more than the bladder. Bedwetting alone does not identify the cause, so symptoms and a urine test guide the assessment.

Arrange a medical assessment when new bedwetting occurs with stinging, urgency, daytime frequency, tummy pain, fever, or a child who seems unwell. Encourage ordinary fluids and regular toilet visits; do not use leftover antibiotics. Keep a note of the wetting, urine symptoms, temperature, and any medicines already given. A clinician may request a urine sample and advise treatment based on the findings.

Seek urgent care for fever with back or side pain, repeated vomiting, shaking chills, severe pain, unusual sleepiness, or difficulty drinking. Infants and children who look significantly unwell need prompt review. Do not rely on bedwetting improving by itself when these warning signs are present.
